Harry Potter Quotes

Difficulty

“I don’t go looking for trouble. Trouble usually finds me.”

Based on the events in Harry’s life, he feels that he always seems to be involved in difficult situations. Of course, he does not feel he has ever been actively looking for trouble but the circumstances of his life story had always been mysterious, especially regarding his parents. Harry always had the choice to explore the mysteries, which would lead to more trouble, or alternatively he could ignore them. Incorrectly he feels he doesn’t look for trouble, but he does. However, the choices he makes are to find closure on what happened with his family, even if he is not aware of this.

Attitude

“If you’re going to be cursed forever, death’s better, isn’t it?”

Here we can see that sometimes Harry can have a rather pessimistic perspective on events. He feels that it is better to not live than to live a life of bad fortune. Despite this view, Harry had experienced having an unfortunate life during his youth and instead, he fought through it and made his own fortune. Harry’s approach is often to act on situations that are unfavourable to him, with a huge risk, so he can make a positive future for himself.

Luck

“Well – I was lucky once, wasn’t I? I might get lucky again.”

This quote further shows the risk-taking nature of Harry Potter. Although he understands the risks associated with certain challenges, he often feels optimistic about what he can do to change a situation in his favour. By remaining calm and confident, he increases his chances of success as he doesn’t allow himself to be overcome with fear, affecting his performance.

Pain

“I can hear my mum screaming and pleading with Voldemort. And if you’d heard your mum screaming like that, just about to be killed, you wouldn’t forget it in a hurry.”

Harry is a person who is plagued with memories of bad life experiences. Although he tries to keep himself from thinking about these moments as they are not pleasant, it is only natural that they crop up from time to time. Instead of being badly affected by these, Harry uses these as fuel to go after justice in his life, and acts accordingly.

Humour

“But I could do with a few laughs. We could all do with a few laughs. I’ve got a feeling we’re going to need them more than usual before long.”

Due to the difficulties he faces in his adventure, Harry is able to acknowledge the need for light-heartedness in his life. As people go through complicated periods in their life, it is important to be able to take a step back and find the humour in their situation. By doing this, they can lower their stress levels before refocusing on the challenge with a fresher mind. Harry understands himself well and realises he can change his outlook with some down-time, re-charge his batteries and go again.

Sarcasm

“Wow, I wonder what it’d be like to have a difficult life?”

Here we can see that behind Harry’s serious exterior, he does have a sense of humour based on sarcasm. For Harry, sarcasm is a way of showing others how he feels without making them feel sorry for him. They will be able to understand that he is affected by something, without taking his emotions too seriously. By his use of sarcasm, it seems he is trying to hide the way he is dealing with problems in his life, using humour to bring these up and not appear sombre.

Acceptance

“The wand’s more trouble than it’s worth. And quite honestly, I’ve had enough trouble for a lifetime.”

With some reflection on his life, Harry starts to feel as though the talent he has spent much of his life working on (Wizardry), has caused him more negatives than positives. Harry can often view things with a downbeat mindset but the important thing for him is not in what he says but rather in what he does. He understands fully that his life as a Wizard was what he needed to do to get closure on the events that have plagued him. Regardless of his viewpoint, his actions are always to solve problems.
